*{Business has to win trust (06-05-2002) [http://www.iccwbo.org/home/denver/denver_rep/openig3watts.asp]} Phil Watts, Chairman of Royal Dutch/Shell told the opening session that the power of markets was to stimulate "a ferment of innovation and then test advances in the fierce fire of competition." But markets could only carry out their essential role if business was trusted. "People have to be convinced that liberalization and globalization will improve their lives, and those of the poorest in society. They won't accept this just because we say so. "We need to demonstrate it is true in the way we behave in everything we do - and in our willingness to respond to people's concerns and aspirations. "Trust has to be built on firm foundations." *{back to sessions list}
