*{"Heavy-handed" investors in developing world are criticized (07-05-2002) [http://www.iccwbo.org/home/denver/denver_rep/quaynor.asp]} Nii Quaynor, Executive Chairman, Network Computer Systems, Ghana, accused some big international companies of crowding out local investors in his country. As quoted in the Denver press, he said that in Ghana, a handful of Western telecommunications companies had scooped up all the wireless phone frequencies, limiting competition and leaving little for local investors. "A heavy-handed investor can cause a lot of damage in a country like Ghana, where regulatory institutions are young and not fully developed," Mr Quaynor said. "I would like to see them help us train our regulators, to help us build our schools. I would like to hear them say: 'We are going to Africa to help build a market, so we can share in that market, instead of going after quick profits.'" *{back to sessions list}
