*{Global rules for a global economy (08-05-2002) [http://www.iccwbo.org/home/denver/denver_rep/governance.asp]} A bigger role for the United Nations as globalization advances was foreseen during the session on global governance. Helmut Maucher, Honorary Chairman of Nestle and a former ICC President, said that in an open and global market rules and laws had to converge, as had already happened in the European Union. An example was antitrust legislation, preventing worldwide monopolies or restrictive practices, Mr Maucher said. He added that the question remained of how uniform antitrust laws should be introduced - whether a job for the World Trade Organization or through a separate institutional set-up within the United Nations. "Whether they like it or not, the United Nations will have to play a bigger role in every respect, should the world grow together and the globalization process advance." This also meant that nations, countries and regions had to give up some of their sovereignty to world-wide institutions, Mr Maucher added. *{back to sessions list}
